Tomato is a frequent and welcome guest on our table at any time of the year. Of course, the most delicious vegetables are grown on their own. Here we control the whole development process of tomatoes - we choose what to fertilize the plants, how to deal with pests and diseases, at what stage of ripeness to pick the fruits. Of course, we want tomatoes to hurt less, ripen faster and bear fruit abundantly before frosts. On the way from sowing seeds for seedlings to harvest, we are in for a lot of worries, lurking a lot of trouble. We also have assistants, we just need to know about them and use them correctly. Today we will learn what iodine means for tomato seedlings - whether it is a friend or an enemy, should it be used.

Iodine value for tomato

Iodine is not considered a vital element for plant organisms, the mechanism of its effect on the flora is poorly understood. But the fact that such an impact exists and is beneficial is beyond doubt.

Important! In small quantities, this element has a stimulating effect on plants, in particular, on tomatoes, but its large doses are toxic.

Iodine in the life of the tomato itself does not play a decisive role. They do not have to process them at all - such a thing as plant iodine deficiency simply does not exist. We can say that this element acts as a catalyst - it stimulates the best absorption of nutrients, activates the plant’s own defense mechanisms.

Tomatoes can receive iodine from soil, fertilizers, with root, foliar treatments. The need for such treatments varies depending on the soil and the chemicals you use. The following soils are considered the richest in the content of this element:

  • Tundra peatlands;
  • Red soil;
  • Chernozems;
  • Chestnut soil.

Iodine-poor soils:

  • Podzolic;
  • Gray forest;
  • Sierozem;
  • Solontsy;
  • Burozems.

Knowing what kind of soil in your area can be determined, iodine must be applied or only if problems arise. It should be borne in mind that it is contained in:

  • phosphate flour;
  • manure;
  • peat;
  • peat ash;
  • wood ash.

It is present in many other organic and inorganic supplements, but since it is not considered an important element, its content may be very high, and may be zero - depending on where the raw materials for the manufacture of fertilizers were taken from. It is simply not specifically added or removed.

The effect of iodine on seedlings

If used properly, it will be a reliable helper for us at all stages of growing a tomato until the ovaries appear - it is not recommended to use it later. As a result of the influence of iodine, the yield of tomatoes increases, their development is accelerated, and resistance to diseases and pests is increased.

Nutrient absorption

Those who write that iodine is a seedling for tomato seedlings are wrong. It helps to better assimilate nutrients from the soil, air, fertilizers. It helps to process nitrogen so well that the need for its additional doses disappears. This does not mean that the seedlings can be treated with iodine solution and not fed with nitrogen at all - it does not replace the nitrogen fertilizer, but simply helps to absorb nutrients in full.

Help in the fight against disease

Iodine has a powerful bactericidal action. It is used for stimulation, disinfection of seeds, for the treatment and prevention of late blight, various rot, blotches, fungal diseases. It has been observed that tomatoes treated with iodine solution rarely suffer from viruses. A plant affected by a virus can only be destroyed so that it does not infect its neighbors - there is simply no cure for viruses today. But iodine as a prophylactic is an excellent remedy.

Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes - relatives, pests and diseases they are similar. If you have a small vegetable garden, it is not possible to swap crops, then besides treating the soil with copper-containing preparations in the fall or early spring, the soil can be shed with iodine solution.

Improving the quality of the fruit

In the process of watering tomato seedlings with iodine solution, it was noticed that it promotes early flowering and fruit ripening. Further experiments only confirmed this guess. Iodine does not allow the stretching of tomato seedlings, and in adult plants it helps eliminate lethargy and yellowing of leaves. It stimulates and strengthens the immune system of the plant.

A warning! When the fruits begin to set, any treatments, both root and off-root, need to be stopped.

If for plants iodine in itself does not matter much, then for a man its role can not be overestimated. Root and foliar treatment of plants with iodine significantly increase its content in tomatoes, which are one of the suppliers of this element for our body.

Seed soaking before planting

One drop of iodine is dissolved in a liter of water and tomato seeds are soaked for 6 hours before planting. It disinfects planting material and stimulates the sprouting sprouts.

Comment! Do not forget that the seeds coated with a colored cover are not soaked before planting.

Tomato seedling processing

This treatment is carried out not earlier than one week after the first feeding with mineral fertilizers. The solution is prepared in one of the ways:

  • 1 drop of iodine dissolve in 3 liters of water;
  • 2 drops dissolve in 2 liters of water and 0.5 liters of milk.

Early in the morning, sprout tomato seedlings with a solution of watering can with a strainer so that moisture gets on the leaves. It is only necessary to slightly moisten the soil and leaves.

Watering the soil before planting seedlings

In ten liters of water, dissolve three drops of iodine, pour plenty of soil a day before the transplanting. Such a solution will disinfect the soil, improve plant survival.
